1000 DAYS OF BREASTFEEDING
MOTHERS ARE ADVISED TO RESPECT 1000 DAYS OF BREASTFEEDING
Breastfeeding has health benefits for both babies and mothers. Breast milk provides a baby with ideal nutrition and supports growth and development. Breastfeeding can also help protect baby and mom against certain illnesses and diseases.
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends breastfeeding until 2 years old and above 2 years because the benefits continue that long. The Doctors recommended to start as early as one hour after birth for the biggest benefits.
The Ministry of Health in Rwanda urges Rwandan mothers to practice Exclusive. Exclusive breastfeeding should start immediately after birth. The mothers should try to breastfeed their babies exclusively until they are around 6 months old. If a baby is exclusively breastfed, they don’t need water or any other drinks or food until they are around 6 months old.
After 6 months, exclusive breast milk is not enough on its own for the baby to grow and develop. The mothers should start their baby on solid food and also continue breastfeeding until they are at least 2 years old. When mothers are away from their babies, they should try to ensure that they are fed with expressed breast milk.
Breastfeeding is very beneficial to the baby and the mother. It helps to protect the baby against colds, tummy bugs, infections and allergies. The mother breastfeeding feels closer to her baby and may reduce some cancers and bone diseases.
In fact, the benefits of breastfeeding are so numerous that most health agencies recommend it for everyone for as long as possible, barring medical problems that prevent it. Breast milk contains antibodies and other elements that protect your baby from illness and chronic disease. It’s the best start you can give, if you are able. Plus, we can’t discount the big benefits to you, for health reasons and convenience. No matter what choice you make, your healthcare team can guide you to the right methods and choices.
