DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION:

The Department of Surgery is one of clinical departments at University Teaching Hospital of Butare (CHUB) and it focuses on provision of health promotion activities, the diagnosis and treatment of different surgical conditions together with training and education the next generation of surgeons, nurses, ophthalmic clinical officers and dental therapist scientists. 

Driven by a commitment to finding solutions for you, our patients, we offer care in several specialized areas, divided into the following units: Orthopedic Surgery, General Surgery, Urology, Neurosurgery, Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT/ORL), Ophthalmology vision center, Oro-Maxillo-Facial Surgery (stomatology/dental) and the Operating Theatre.

SERVICES OFFERED

A. OUTPATIENT CONSULTATION (OPD): for General Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, ENT, Stomatology and Ophthalmology. We receive the patient for medical consultation every day from Monday to Friday at 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. For Urology, Currently we have OPD only Monday and Tuesday from 8:00 a.m to 5:00 p.m.  For Neurosurgery, we have OPD only on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 08:00 a.m to 5:00 p.m.  In dual clinical practice (DCP), we have some Drs in the DCP from 5:00 pm to 7:30 pm. During the weekends we receive the patient in dual clinical practice (DCP) from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm and for Urology, we receive the patients in DCP all Friday from 08:00 a.m to 3:00 p.m.

For ambulatory patient in OPD we do consultations and follow up for our patient, admission of urgent and elective patient for underwent surgery, we perform minor procedures and minor surgeries, plaster clinic services for orthopedic patients. Prescription and dispensing eye glasses and also, we perform special investigations based on our specialties: fundoscopy and refraction, Audiometry, Tympanometry, Peri apical x-ray, Maxillary defile.

B. HOSPITALIZATION: for inpatients the service is offered to our patient, caretakers and visitors 24hours/7days, the main activities are: admission of the patient, nursing and medical care performed on daily basis, in patient consultations/ward rounds. Minor surgery procedures, medical and nursing acts are performed in minor surgery including apply and remove the cast.

Multidisciplinary consultations and follow up like nutrition support, physiotherapy, psycho-social support, palliative care.  Theatre is functioning 24 hours/7days where the different surgeries are performed for emergency, elective requiring surgery intervention through open or minimal invasive surgery (Laparoscopy) and now in orthopedics we perform knee and hip replacement by using the implants.

Our services are offered to the neonate, infants, children, adults and elderly patient. The operation is performed in the operation rooms and after the operation the patient are cared in recovery room for post anesthesia care while waiting for fully recovery before being returned in the ward for post-operative management or ICU/NICU if required.

Our department work together with CHUB orthopedic workshop where the patients are offered the crutches, prosthesis in different varieties

DEPARTMENT LEADERSHIP AND HUMAN RESOURCE:

Surgery department has 06 Consultants General surgeons, 03 Consultants Orthopaedist surgeons, 02 Consultant in Urologist, 02 Consultant in Stomatology, 02 Consultants in ENT and 01 Consultant Ophthalmologist, work together with 03 Doctors General Practitioners, 04 Dental therapists, 04 ophthalmic clinical officers and 64 Registered Nurses. The coordination of activities in the department started from In charges/Unit managers then heads of units and after to the Head of department and the Matron of the department who work hand on hand in the coordination of all activities of the department.

VISITING HOURS FOR HOSPITALISED PATIENTS: MORNING: 6AM-8AM, MID-DAY: 12AM-2PM, EVENING: 6PM-8PM
